The Venetian Arsenal (in Italian, Arsenale di Venezia) was the heart of the Venetian naval industry from the thirteenth century. It is related to the most flourishing period of the life of the Serenissima: thanks to the massive ships built there, Venice through the centuries was able at the beginning to control the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea (to safeguard the economic interest of its merchants) and later to compete with the Turks for the control of the Aegean and the Adriatic.

The Arsenale di Venezia was one of the largest pre-industrial production centers in the world and the heart of the Venetian naval industry from the 13th century onwards. It stretches over an area of 46 hectares and was renowned for its unique ship-building techniques. The most breathtaking architectural feature of the Arsenale di Venezia is the Porta Magna, which functions as the main gate.
