In this zoo, we can feel rich nature of Kyoto and learn the relation of Homo sapiens and the wild animals. You can really sense the forest of Kyoto bodily, seeing the zoo.

Kyoto City Zoo is a great way to keep the kids entertained for a few hours. The animal enclosures are well laid out and the entire zoo is pleasantly spacious and easy to explore. In addition to the animals on display, there’s also a fun little amusement park with rides that kids love. The Ferris wheel here gives you a great view over the Northern Higashiyama area. Finally, there’s a proper sit-down restaurant above the main entrance, as well as a snack bar and a rest area with a huge collection of Japanese-language animal books. And on the opposite side of the zoo, there’s a small snack bar with an outdoor seating area where you can enjoy ice creams on a hot summer day.

I bet you thought Kyoto only had temples and shrines, right? But the city also has many other attractions, such as a zoo, a botanical garden and even an aquarium. Kyoto's zoo is the 2nd oldest zoo in Japan, only behind Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. Only a 5-min walk from our KYOBU-Higashiyama house and Hotel MATERIAL.
