Villa Mairea was built in 1939 as the home of Maire and Harry Gullichsen, two lovers and supporters of art. Progressive and unprejudiced, they were interested in straightforward modernist expression. Their dear friends, architects Aino and Alvar Aalto, were given the freedom and opportunity for experimental design. These propitious conditions generated a unique work of art, which is now regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of 20th-century architecture. The interior design of Mairea was the work of Aino Aalto.
