On the shores of Lough Derg. 'Although gutted by fire in 1826,' the guidebook says, 'the Castle is still an imposing example of early 17th Century Irish architecture.' Actually very interesting.
Castle & gardens include a 17th century walled kitchen garden. This Manor was the seat of the De Burgo family for over 200 years. Nearby are Lough Derg, the river Shannon and Portumna Forest Park.
We love the restored garden here at Portumna Castle, not to mind the whole history of the 'big house'. Worth a visit especially if combined with a visit to the Workhouse in Portumna.

Another slice of history that's fascinating to learn about.
