Lesser known (and thus less crowded) than Starved Rock, this hidden gem has similar scenery in a more compact form, plus a more complete experience of walking in a canyon's riverbed. If you only have two hours for nature, go here.
Although not as well known as Starved Rock, this park is also good for hiking, especially when Starved Rock is too crowded. We recommend going at the end of July when their massive sunflower fields bloom.
Just a 10 minute drive from Kishauwau's Starved Rock Area Cabins. Matthiessen State Park is not as well known as Starved Rock but is my personal favorite for hiking. There is a park in the Dells entrance. Also with miles & miles of hiking! Tip: Head down to the wishing well. Kids love the pool of water in the bottom with caves & caverns to check out.
