St Nicholas Island, also known as “Gemiler Island”, is famous for being the supposed resting place of Saint Nicholas or otherwise known as “Santa Claus”. The island is located only 20kms away from the large town of Fethiye. It is believed that when St Nicholas died in 326 he was buried here on the island before moving remains to Demre due to increased pirate raids. The island is scattered in some impressive ruins well worth the exploration. There are five churches that date back to the 4th and 6th centuries AD along with a large covered walkway that is over 300 meters long. St Nicholas Island is also one of the best spots to sit atop and get to witness one of the most magical sunsets in Turkey.

Gemiler Adası, Muğla iline bağlı, Fethiye Körfezi'nin güney ucunda, Fethiye'ye 9 km. mesafede bir adadır. Yörede Gemile Adası olarak bilinir. 'Gemiler Adası' ismi bunun daha Türkçeleştirilmiş şekli olmalıdır. Adanın ismiyle ilgili bazı rivayetler vardır. Örneğin; adanın en yüksek noktasındaki kilisenin Aziz Nikolas’a ithaf edildiği Ortaçağ Dönemine ait bir denizcilik rehberinde rastlandığı bilinmektedir. Gemiler Island is connected to Muğla province, at the southern end of Fethiye Bay, 9 km from Fethiye. It is an island in the distance. It is known locally as Gemile Island. The name 'Gemiler Island' should be a more Turkish version of it. There are some rumors about the name of the island. For example; It is known that the church on the highest point of the island was dedicated to St. Nicholas in a maritime guide belonging to the Medieval Period. With a wall extending in the east-west direction on the northern slope of the island, the religious buildings concentrated on the top of the hill and the civil and commercial buildings below can be distinguished. This indicates that the upper part of the island is a sanctuary. M.S. 5-13. The fact that there are so many religious structures in and around Gemile Island, which is understood to have been inhabited between centuries, may be the increase in the number of pilgrimages by sea to the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts from Asia Minor in the 5th and 7th centuries. It also reveals its relationship with maritime trade. You can go here with boat tours departing from Ölüdeniz or you can pass by a private boat from the ships bay. Watching the sunset with wine from the top of the island in summer is priceless .
