Lyman Museum & Mission House is a Hawaiian natural history museum. A portion of the museum is located in the island’s oldest surviving wood-framed building, an 1838 home. Open since 1931, the museum is now an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

Terrific natural history museum right in downtown Hilo. Has the first mission house ever built in Hawaii still set up to tour!

Built in 1838 as the Lyman family home, it now houses collections of all things Hawaiiana. I especially enjoyed the shell collection. There are sometimes special events and performances there. There is also a gift shop. The Mission House next door requires a separate fee and reservations.

Excellent natural history and Hawaiian culture exhibits, also feature special exhibits monthly. Be sure to take a guided tour of the Mission House, the museum's largest artifact. Don't miss their world class gem and mineral exhibit and the mollusks as well.
