A popular place with city bikers, this small bar hasn’t changed a bit since the ’40s. It’s the perfect place for a stop when biking through the Gothic Quarter. You can bring your bike up to the bar, which faces the street, or lean it up against the door along with the other bikes that are sure to be there. I always stop here after a ride for anchovies, butifarra, tomato and onion salad, or olives with fried sardines. It’s a tradition.

The three essential tapas at this emblematic bar with just six tables are the fried whole anchovies, the tomato salad, onion and olive salad, and the ‘pintxo’ of ‘morcilla’ sausage. “Typical typical Catalan food, best calçots in town. Up in the hills of the Tibidabo, with the best view on town and the sea a restaurant in Barcelona can offer!!! ”

Cocktail bar
“This is a cocktail bar with soul, and an ideal spot for night owls. I can’t think of a better place to end your evening. The name of the game here is classic cocktails done right, like the spectacular old-fashioned mixed to perfection by tireless bartender Paco Bretau. They book lots of good pop and indie rock bands, too. They do classic cocktails like no one else, but if you want to delve into more exotic flavors, those are excellent as well. Try the Sahara, made with Glenrothes whiskey infused with ras el hanout, fig jam, almond syrup, black tea, green anise, and fresh lime juice.”

Tapas Restaurant
“This tavern frequented by those who work at or near the sea has got to be a favourite for hearty lunches in Barcelona. Among the iron-and-marble tables, you can get lunch specialities every day that will put hair on your chest: stewed garbanzos, 'capipota' and salted cod are just some of the stars on the menu. La Cova Fumada is said to be the birthplace of the spicy potato and mince meat 'bomba', and as Josep Maria tells us, it was here where, over 60 years ago, his grandmother Maria Pla invented this local delight. ”
