Mario is a pleasant friendly person. As he is Italian he cooks fresh food every night, and we had interesting conversations about food – I found out the brand of tinned tomatoes I thought I had been buying for 20 years were the best quality but they are apparently the worst! He was quiet in his room and reliably locked up the house when necessary, and we only saw him mainly in the evenings as he was here to improve his English by studying during the day. His girlfriend came to stay for a few days and she was lovely.
Mario thought he was getting the flat to himself, perhaps as his English isn’t good he didn’t realise we lived there as well. He still lives with his parents and it showed in his housekeeping. He was good at clearing up after himself in the kitchen and washing up, although he never put anything away and his washing up wasn’t great and had to be finished. We wondered why he used one roll of toilet paper every two days and discovered eventually he was using it partly to dry his face as well as to blow his nose, although I had told him when he came that I could give him towels if he needed them. Again, perhaps his English wasn’t good enough to understand at first but he was capable of asking for things. We had to keep asking him not to leave used kitchen towel and toilet paper he had used to blow his nose lying around in the kitchen and bathroom, and when he left also found it left on the floor of the bedroom.
Mario’s laptop couldn’t connect to the router when it was downstairs, so I put it upstairs when he needed it and told him to ask me any time he wanted to use it. I need it downstairs for work and was quite happy to move it but he didn’t ask me much so I assumed he was OK. We haven’t had that issue with all our other guests and we understand exactly how important wifi is.
