Casa Alang Alang

Built with materials from Indonesia and boasting views of the ocean in two directions, Casa Alang Alang is the perfect marriage of relaxed Balinese style and unforgettable Costa Rican scenery. Built atop a hill near the Tamarindo estuary, the property has views along Playa Grande—including vistas of the sunset over the Pacific—and a location a short walk from the beach and town. Seven suite-style bedrooms, including one in a guest house, make the expansive villa feel like your own private beach resort. At Casa Alang Alang, wake up each day and enjoy a breakfast that’s already been prepared before stepping outside and deciding which of the two pools will be your first swim of the day. Sunbathe in the lounge chairs on the deck, nap in the hammock, exercise in the fitness room or book a treatment on the massage table. Rinse off in the outdoor shower before preparing dinner on the barbecue and sitting down to eat at the al-fresco dining area. Though it feels secluded, the villa is fully connected with Apple TV and Wi-Fi. The villa was designed by California architect Steve Adams to take advantage of the gorgeous views, with living spaces that can be completely opened to the outdoors. In the great room, a vaulted ceiling adds to the breezy feeling, as do woven sofas and chairs with sophisticated charcoal cushions. Just next to the sitting area, the generous ironwood dining table seats everyone in wicker chairs. The fully equipped kitchen is open to the rest of the space, but a separate walk-in pantry allows for storage and prep work. If the beach views aren’t enough and you need to put your toes in the sand, it’s a 5-minute walk from the villa to Pangas Beach Club and the town center. Villa Estrella

Fishing charters arrive by morning and sunsets glow by evening in the views from this hilltop villa with Mediterranean flair in Ocotal. Columns and wrought-iron decorations frame vistas of lush hillside running down to the ocean, where rocks and islands dot the waves. Venture out to snorkel and sail, take a horseback ride or tour of the jungle canopy, and finish the day 5 minutes away in Coco. Keep an eye out for boats pulling up to the beach below from a terrace with an infinity pool, hot tub, and plenty of seating in the shade. Open the windows in the wellness center and let the breezes flow like a breath through your yoga practice, and heat up the barbecue for an alfresco lunch or dinner. Finish the day with a family movie night in the media room. A slide-away glass wall divides the terrace from an open-concept great room whose wicker and palm-print furniture have a breezy, beachy feel.
